  14.         <text><span class="style42"></span><span class="style12">KUWAIT</span><span class="style42"></span><span class="style14"></span><span class="style42">Official name: </span><span class="style13">Daulat al-Kuwait (State of Kuwait)</span><span class="style42">Member of: </span><span class="style13">UN, Arab League, OPEC, GCC</span><span class="style42">Area: </span><span class="style13">17 818 km2 (6880 sq mi)</span><span class="style42">Population: </span><span class="style13">1430000 (1993 est)</span><span class="style42">Capital: </span><span class="style13">Kuwait City 1375000 (including agglomeration; 1993 unofficial est)</span><span class="style42">Language: </span><span class="style13">Arabic (official)</span><span class="style42">Religion: </span><span class="style13">Sunni Islam (official; 70%), Shia Islam (30%)</span><span class="style42">GOVERNMENT</span><span class="style13">Kuwait is a monarchy ruled by an Amir, who appoints a Prime Minister and a Cabinet. A 50-member National Assembly is elected for four years by literate male Kuwaiti nationals whose families fulfil stringent residence qualifications.</span><span class="style42">GEOGRAPHY</span><span class="style13">Most of Kuwait is desert, relatively flat and low lying. </span><span class="style42">Climate: </span><span class="style13">Kuwait experiences extremes of heat in summer. Almost all the annual rainfall of 100 mm (4 in) comes during the cooler winter.</span><span class="style42">ECONOMY</span><span class="style13">The economy was devastated by the Iraqi invasion and Gulf War (1991), but reconstruction followed rapidly. Large reserves of petroleum and natural gas are the mainstay of the economy. Owing to lack of water, little agriculture is possible. </span><span class="style42">Currency: </span><span class="style13">Kuwait dinar.</span><span class="style42">HISTORY</span><span class="style13">Islam came to Kuwait during the Prophet MuhammadΓÇÖs lifetime. In 1760 the Sabah family created the emirate that has lasted to today, although from 1899 to 1961 Kuwait was a British-protected state. Oil was discovered in 1938 and was produced commercially from 1946. In August 1990 Iraq invaded and annexed Kuwait. When Iraq failed to respond to repeated UN demands to withdraw, the UN authorized armed action. Kuwait was liberated by a US-led coalition early in 1991 in the short Gulf War. After liberation, pressure for constitutional change grew and the constitution (suspended since 1968) was restored. Before 1990, Kuwait had a large population of foreign workers, mainly Palestinians, who were perceived to have favored the Iraqi occupation forces. Since 1991, most of the non-Kuwaiti Arab workers have fled or been deported, to be replaced by migrants from the Indian subcontinent on short-term contracts. Iraq made further threats against Kuwait in 1994 but was┬áforced to climb down ΓÇô and formally recognize Kuwaiti independence ΓÇô after international pressure. </span></text>
